To maintain the beauty of your jewelry for as long as possible, it is best to clean your jewelry regularly.
Here are a few tips and tricks on how to care for your jewelry properly:
Cleaning stainless steel jewelry:
The care of stainless steel jewelry is not as difficult and problematic as you might know it from gold or silver jewelry. It is only important to pay attention to the structure of the stainless steel.
Stainless steel with a shiny surface:
For shiny surfaces, we recommend a soft microfiber cloth or a normal cloth. Please make sure that the cloth is not too hard, otherwise scratches may appear on the polished stainless steel surface. You can also use a light soapy water solution because, unlike other jewelry, it will not tarnish.
Stainless steel with brushed surface:
We also recommend a soft cloth for stainless steel with a brushed, matte surface. Clean the jewelry with plenty of water and a light soap solution. Use a glass bowl or plastic container and fill it with warm water. Then add a few drops of soap or dish soap to the water.
Depending on the hardness of the dirt, you can leave the jewelry to soak for about 10 to 30 minutes. Then rinse your jewelry under cold running water and dry it carefully with a soft microfiber cloth.
Make sure to dry your stainless steel jewelry really well so that no annoying water spots appear on the jewelry.
Gold plating: If your jewelry is yellow gold or rose gold-plated, do not clean it too aggressively, as the gold plating can peel off over time. Lukewarm water, a mild soap and a soft cloth are usually sufficient for care. Above all, make sure to dry your jewelry carefully and gently.
Summary for both types of surface:
- A gentle cloth
- Water / light soapy water
- Do not press too hard
Cleaning silver jewelry:
First, to reassure you: tarnishing of silver is a positive quality feature. Only genuine silver tarnishes as a result of a normal chemical reaction with oxygen.
Similar to stainless steel jewelry, silver jewelry can also be cleaned. The only difference is that you need to soak your silver jewelry in the water bath for a few minutes. It is also advisable to clean the jewelry carefully with a toothbrush.
If you only want to clean your silver jewelry occasionally, we recommend using a silver polishing cloth.
Cleaning pearl jewelry:
Since freshwater pearls are a natural product, they require special cleaning. Bathe your pearl jewelry in lukewarm water with a mild soap, then rinse the jewelry with clear water and place the pearl jewelry on a towel to dry. If your pearls are dirty, you can also clean them with a cloth or a soft brush.
A little tip: To keep your pearls shiny for as long as possible, we recommend rubbing them with a few drops of olive oil every 2 to 3 years.
Jewelry storage:
To ensure that you enjoy your jewelry for a long time, it is important to take care of it and store it properly.
It is best to keep jewelry made of real silver in an airtight container. Jewelry boxes are suitable for this purpose, as they protect your jewelry from moisture and oxygen. It is also a good idea to store the items in small bags so that they do not get scratched.
Stainless steel jewelry, on the other hand, can be placed on decorative jewelry stands. The effects of light and air do not affect it much.
When you should NOT wear your jewelry:
Your favorite jewelry is confronted with all kinds of "dangers" in everyday life. Therefore, there are a few points you should keep in mind when caring for and storing it:
Caution Corrosive! Jewelry should not come into contact with chemicals, as they attack the material and gold plating. Therefore, we advise you to take off your jewelry when doing housework or during your daily beauty routine (cosmetics).
Hydrophobia. Gold-plated jewelry lasts longer if you don't expose it to too much water. Can't do without your jewelry when showering or swimming? Then go for a non-gold-plated version. You should always take off your jewelry in chlorinated swimming pool water, as the chlorine attacks the material and can discolor gold.
Sleeping Beauty. It's better to take off your jewelry before sleeping. You don't necessarily need it for your beauty sleep, and this way your favorite accessory can relax for a while.
Sport muffle. You may be athletic, but your jewelry isn't. Sweat can attack silver, gold and stainless steel. That's why jewelry should be taken off before sport activities (this is also recommended because of the risk of injury).
